4 Things Your Leaky Roof Is Trying to Tell You

October 16, 2022

Whether you discovered water inside your attic or found a watermark on your bedroom ceiling, a roof leak can be a scary business. But don’t panic; many leaks have simple causes that a qualified roofer can sniff out and repair relatively quickly. Learn four things your leaky roof may be trying to tell you.

1. You have flashing problems.

Flashing problems are a common issue for homeowners. These leaks can be caused by aging roof flashing or poor installation during a previous roofing project.

  • Common spots for flashing leaks include:some text
    • Around the chimney
    • At vent boots or flanges
    • Where a wall meets a roof slope

You’ll likely need a professional to fix the flashing because incorrect technique or materials can worsen the problem if you attempt a DIY fix.

2. Your gutters need some love.

Gutters are there to collect rainwater runoff from your roof and channel it away from your house. However, clogged or damaged gutters can cause leaks.

  • Backed-up gutters can overflow and cause water to cascade over the sides, down your siding, and potentially under your eaves.
  • Ice dams can form in winter, trapping water against the roof and allowing it to seep through.

To prevent ice dams, ensure your attic is well-ventilated and insulated. Good insulation prevents warm air from reaching the attic and melting snow, which can refreeze and form ice dams.

3. Your chimney needs to be inspected.

Your chimney, even if unused, can affect your roof in several ways. The flashing around the chimney can leak if it’s damaged, improperly installed, or worn out. In some cases, water can seep through cracks in the mortar and leak into your home.

4. You need to vent.

Sometimes, roof leaks originate from condensation inside your roof. Humidity in the air can condense on the underside of your roof and drip down, causing water damage on your ceilings. This might be happening if you see rusty nails in your roof deck or compressed insulation under the nails.

Poor attic ventilation can cause condensation problems. Blocked soffit vents due to excessive insulation or clogged vents with bird nests, dust, or cobwebs can restrict airflow. A professional roofer can help identify and fix ventilation issues.

These are just four potential causes of roof leaks. If you can’t identify the source yourself, a professional can diagnose the problem and provide repairs.
